Nine people are the supreme arbiters of the United States Constitution. These nine people rule on our most civil and basic rights as citizens. Choosing a nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States is one of the most important and lasting decisions a president can make. After a controversial first 12 days in office, the world will have its eyes on the White House this evening as President Trump makes his announcement for who he nominates to become the next Associate Justice to the Supreme Court.
Any judge should be ethical, wise, courageous, and of sound judgment. However, a Supreme Court Justice should be all those things and more, modeling for all other nations a judicial temperament and have irrefutable integrity. It is my sincere hope that the President will select such a candidate. No matter the nominee, I encourage the Senate to conduct a thorough and fair hearing process to ensure that our next Justice is one that can be trusted to act in the interest of all Americans by protecting our rights and liberties granted by the Constitution.
